On day 12, we did a day trip from York up to Whitby on the North Sea. Overlooking the sea are the ruins of Whitby Abbey, built around 1075 and "supressed" in 1539 by order of Henry VIII.

Our first look at Whitby Abbey. In the foreground is the Church of St. Mary and its ancient cemetery. This point of view is described in Bram Stoker's Novel, Dracula, and this cemetery plays a major role in the novel.

Whitby Abbey is visible from the North Sea. When the cathedral was attacked by the troops of Henry III, they did not totally destroy it because it was a well know landmark used by mariners.
