Day 12 - Whitby Abbey

On day 12, we did a day trip from York up to Whitby on the North Sea. Overlooking the sea are the ruins of Whitby Abbey, built around 1075 and "supressed" in 1539 by order of Henry VIII.

This point of view is described in Bram Stoker's Novel, Dracula, and this cemetery plays a major role in the novel. Whitby harbor with the Whitby Abbey ruins on the hill overlooking it.

Whitby Abbey is visible from the North Sea. When the cathedral was attacked by the troops of Henry III, they did not totally destroy it because it was a well know landmark used by mariners. 20130901-104820 p1000714 20130901-104856 p1000715 20130901-105019 dsc 6139
